This milestone document underscores the company's commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles, reinforcing its mission to create a sustainable and ethical future for all stakeholders.

A Legacy of Responsibility

Big Dutchman’s Chairman of the Supervisory Board Bernd Meerpohl.

Founded 85 years ago, Big Dutchman has long embraced sustainability as part of its DNA. From its humble beginnings in Calveslage, Germany, the company has grown into an international enterprise with over 3,100 employees across seven continents. As a family-owned business, its ethos is deeply rooted in long-term responsibility—not only for its employees and customers but also for the environment and society at large.

Chairman of the Supervisory Board Bernd Meerpohl highlights the company’s core values, emphasising reliability, innovation, and ethical conduct. These principles are not just aspirational; they are actively practiced in day-to-day operations, whether in the reduction of carbon emissions, the promotion of sustainable farming methods, or the fostering of diverse and inclusive workplaces.

ESG at the Core: The Path to Sustainable Growth

Big Dutchman’s ESG strategy revolves around three key pillars: Environmental Stewardship, Social Responsibility, and Good Governance. Each aspect plays a crucial role in shaping the company’s sustainable business model.

Environmental Stewardship: Reducing Carbon Footprints

The environmental component of Big Dutchman’s ESG approach is centred on reducing its carbon footprint, promoting circular economies, and investing in renewable energy sources.

  • Electromobility Initiative: Recognising the importance of sustainable transport, Big Dutchman has introduced electric vehicle (EV) leasing options for employees, with nearly 130 EVs currently in operation. Employees can charge their vehicles using electricity generated from the company’s own photovoltaic (PV) systems.Self-sustaining EV charging from Big Dutchman’s own photovoltaic systems. Photovoltaic Systems: Since 2015, the company has expanded its solar energy capacity, with its latest installation producing nearly two megawatts of power. By 2025, half of the company’s energy consumption at its headquarters will come from renewable sources.
  • Recycling Initiatives: A key highlight in the company’s sustainability efforts is its upcycling program for manure belts. By transforming used materials into new components, such as transport rollers, Big Dutchman actively reduces waste and lowers CO2 emissions.
  • Carbon Footprint Monitoring: Partnering with Unravel Carbon, Big Dutchman has calculated its CO2 emissions, amounting to approximately 10,800 tonnes annually. The company is taking proactive steps to further reduce its environmental impact in the coming years.

Social Responsibility: People at the Heart of Sustainability

Big Dutchman’s commitment to social responsibility is evident in its workforce diversity, training programs, and ethical supply chain management.

  • Diversity & Inclusion: With employees from 48 nationalities, the company embraces cultural diversity as a strength. Women currently hold 16.8% of leadership roles, and initiatives are in place to increase this percentage in the future.
  • Work-Life Balance & Employee Well-being: The company provides flexible working hours, an attractive benefits package, which includes tax-free prepaid cards, as well as development programs such as "Generation BIG" to nurture talent.
  • Global Training & Development: Big Dutchman has extended its German vocational training model to subsidiaries abroad, including a dual study program in South Africa. Young trainees receive tuition-free education combined with hands-on experience, ensuring a skilled workforce for the future.
  • Supplier Code of Conduct: The company has partnered with Integrity Next to ensure all suppliers adhere to ethical labour and environmental standards. Currently, 70% of direct purchasing orders are awarded to "green" suppliers, with a target to increase this figure further.

Good Governance: Ethical Leadership and Digital Security

A strong governance framework is the backbone of any sustainable business. Big Dutchman enforces strict compliance measures, ensuring transparency, fair competition, and adherence to human rights standards.

  • Compliance Management: Since 2016, the company has implemented a robust compliance framework, including a whistleblowing system that allows employees and external stakeholders to report violations confidentially.
  • Cybersecurity Measures: Recognising the growing threat of cyberattacks, Big Dutchman has fortified its IT infrastructure. The company experiences daily attempted breaches, which are mitigated through proactive security protocols and employee training.
  • Export Controls & Risk Management: Operating in politically volatile regions necessitates stringent export control procedures. The company screens business partners and shipments daily to comply with international regulations.

A Future-Oriented Approach to Sustainability

The team behind Big Dutchman’s sustainability efforts.

Looking ahead, the company aims to:

  • Expand its renewable energy initiatives to further reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
